Summer Sessions at Safety Town
Thank you to everyone who participated in our 2011 Summer Sessions!
If you have any questions about our summer program, please view the FAQs below. Any further questions can be emailed to safetytown@napervillejuniors.org.
Our
Summer Program
The Safety Town Summer Program is a weeklong, 90-minute per day program for children entering kindergarten or 1st grade. Throughout the week, stories, games, songs, and videos reinforce the skills being taught. By using a "hands-on" approach, children absorb important information and have fun at the same time. The Naperville Police and Fire Departments, I-SEARCH, Burling Northern, Naperville Electric, Animal Control, Naperville Junior Woman's Club volunteers, and other community groups help teach safety awareness and prevention.
The nationwide Safety Town program was brought to Naperville in 1978, and in June of 1996 the Naperville Safety Campus opened at 1320 Aurora Ave in Naperville. Our program started out small, but has become mighty and we serve over 1,700 students in our summer program each year. The program introduces pedestrian, bike, fire, railroad, bus, animal, water, and personal safety. During the week, the children have the opportunity to make real-time 911 calls, participate in a fire evacuation drill and practice pedestrian safety and traffic hand signals as they ride special Safety Town vehicles on the streets of Safety Town.

A Special Thank You to Safety Town Participants
On behalf of Families Helping Families I would like to thank all the children that attended Safety Town this summer for the money that was donated to Families Helping Families.
The Naperville Junior Woman's Club that runs Safety Town asked the children attending to bring in loose change to donate to Families Helping Families. The money is converted into quarters that the moms in the program use to do their laundry.
Families Helping Families is a transitional housing program in DuPage County that provides housing to homeless families while they reclaim their lives. These families are on a tight budget and quarters for their laundry helps to free up funds for other necessities.
The children of Naperville raided their piggy banks and did chores around the house to raise money to donate. Thank you to each of you and your parents for participating in collecting over $1,700 dollars during the summer of 2010 at Safety Town.
Families Helping Families is very grateful for so many great friends who care enough to help take care of those in need. Naperville is truly a caring and generous community. On behalf of Families Helping Families, thank you NJWC and the children of Safety Town. Way to go kids!!

A bit of history...
In 1978, the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club (NJWC)
introduced Naperville to a nationwide program called Safety Town.
Thereafter, NJWC coordinated, supervised, and staffed this beneficial
program at temporary locations. In 1993, the Naperville Safety
Town Commission was formed to provide a permanent location for
Safety Town programs. The Safety Town Commission, made up of members
of NJWC and other community leaders, brought Naperville together
to build Safety Town. Located at the corner of River and Aurora
Roads, Safety Town includes a classroom building and a kid-sized
town complete with buildings, streets, a fire safety house, railroad
crossing and traffic signs and signals. The Safety Town facility
was opened in June of 1996.
Safety Town is used
throughout the year for various safety and health related programs
tailored to different age groups. These programs include: Scouts
Play It Safe, Scouts First Aid, Baby-sitting Clinics, CPR, Trick
or Treat at Safety Town, Fingerprinting, Keeping Yourself Safe,
WDSRA Safety Town Sessions and Safety Town Mini Sessions. The
programs offered and when varies from year to year. Check this
site for details on what is available and when. In addition, new
programs are in the developmental stage.
